Sasha ‎– Wavy Gravy

Sasha
Wavy Gravy
2002 Arista

The only single from the masterpiece Airdrawndagger. The team behind it I’d consider the Tri-Force of early 2000s electronica - Charlie May, Junkie XL & Sasha. Although I do enjoy his Involver releases I pray for Airdrawndagger 2 (same line-up of course). Big fan of May’s Spooky project as well, I’ll go dig out one of those to share next.

                          1. Alexander Coe is an odd one for me. On the one side, there's Sasha the DJ - a brilliant one-man show, as well as in partnership with John Digweed. On the other side is Sasha the producer, who has always functioned as part of a team with various collaborators: Tom Frederikse, Gaëtan Schurrer, Richard Dekkard, Brian Transeau, Charlie May, Barry Jamieson, Simon Wright, Tom Holkenborg, etc. I've often wondered how much of the 'Sasha sound' is a result of Coe's input versus the rest of the cooks in the kitchen. I'm not trying to discredit the man - I love Sasha's work (the early stuff more so); however, the rest of the crew is obviously integral to the output.

I don’t think I’m alone in admitting that I was disappointed by “Airdrawndagger” upon its release in 2002. The “Xpander” EP represents arguably the zenith of Sasha’s career as a recording artist; subsequent releases would have a hard time measuring up to that standard. However, Sasha has never been interested in repeating himself, but rather strives to evolve, and thus was created “Airdrawndagger.” I’m listening to the album now (for the first time since its release) and I’m now sorry that I never gave it a chance back then and quickly sold it. It’s still a bit of an acquired taste, but decidedly excellent in retrospect.

Not to be obvious, but none of the selections on “Airdrawndagger” are going to fill a dancefloor, and “Wavy Gravy” likely perplexed plenty of folks as the lone single. However, it is a beautiful composition of atmospheric electronics, and perfectly suited to a chill out room.

                            Thanks H3 :-)

                            1. Nicely put Shelf. I certainly loved him as a DJ (with Digweed) as well and think Xpander is epic. Maybe I loved Airdrawndagger because I could put it on in the Chillout room and do something else or just because I'm a sucker for layers & layers of dark moody synths (Mr. Tiddles still gives me goosebumps). Regardless I'm glad you pulled it back out and enjoyed it!
