Disjecta – Looking For Snags
Disjecta
Looking For Snags
1995 Warp Records
Everything Mark Clifford touches I’m a fan of. Mark described Disjecta as his outlet for his abstract constructivist electronica. Name comes from the Samuel Beckett novel. One of my favourite designs with the artwork of Miranda Holmes designed again by the brilliant Designers Republic.

Squarepusher – Port Rhombus EP
Squarepusher
Port Rhombus EP
1996 Warp Records
The son of a jazz drummer, Tom Jenkinson has been with Warp for over 20 years crafting his acidic D&B. This was his debut single after moving from Richard D. James and Grant Wilson-Claridge’s Replex label. A super classic masterpiece.

Tequila Slammers And The Jump Jump Groove Generation
1993 Warp Records
One of my first compilations from warp and still one of my favourites. Every track is stunning electronic music that we all came to expect from the label. Cool CGI art by Phil Wolstenholme and the brilliant Designers Republic in charge of the rest.

1997 Instinct Electronica
Completing out the Instinct Electronica posts we have Roskow Kretschmann, aka Kosma, who started his musical career in the Berlin Hip Hop scene around 1987. Now a studio engineer, music-composer & producer, who is running his own recording & mastering studio. To boot, he’s also one of the members of the German DJ & Producer collective Jazzanova.

Jimpster – Martian Arts
Jimpster
Martian Arts
1997 Instinct Electronica
Admiringly inspired for these next three from rizan72 over at the brilliant Higher Than The Sun.
Instinct Electronica was a short-lived sublabel of the dazzling Instinct Records that featured holographic CDs and cardboard slipcases. Jimpster (Jamie Odell) is a producer and DJ who founded the London based Deep House label, Freerange Records back in 1996. Jamie has a “Best Deep House Producer” award to his name along with a few more accolades. A little more future jazz than I normally listen too but enough drum n bass to keep me coming back.

Lead Into Gold – Chicks & Speed: Futurism
Lead Into Gold
Chicks & Speed: Futurism
1990 Wax Trax! Records
The baby of multitasking Paul Barker, writing and singing every track. Paul is just about as iconic as Al Jourgensen and of course those two are comrades in Ministry, RevCo, 1000 Homo DJs, Acid Horse and Lard. Great mini-album with the classic WaxTrax! sound. Fun video from back in the day with young Al & Trent Reznor.

Ajax – One World
Ajax
One World
1990 Wax Trax! Records
The second single from the self-titled album by New Yorker Arleen L. Mitchel. Got a bit of a Severed Heads/Manufacture feel to them with the Industrial/House vibe. Not much know about them other than Mitchel making a brief return in 95 only to fade out again into oblivion. I have never met anyone (physically) who has the album or single so maybe this will be something new for a few. “As The World Turns” is only available on this single. Anyone recognize the chant sample in “One World”?

Coil
Aqua Regis · Panic · Tainted Love
1990 Wax Trax! Records
Here is a rare early release from Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson & John Balance. Not sure I can give Coil a proper synopsis other than they would be my definition of electronic/experimentalism music. They have a bizarre & tragic history with a huge catalogue of music and intriguing artwork. Here they take on Soft Cell’s infamous song in a most unique way. An acquired taste and taken in doses, is very impressive.

Qubism 2294 (em:t2294)
1994 em:t
The t:me has come, the last of three em:t posts. This was actually the first em:t cd I bought. I had seen that the Designers Republic had done the cover, and trusting that every cover they designed contained music I liked, it was bought. Richard Shepherd at the controls with fellow label-mate John Crossley (Voodoo Warriors Of Love) assisting. This release is more “tribal ambient techno” and pretty phenomenal. Hope you enjoy as much as I do.

Gas – Gas0095
Gas
Gas0095 (em:t0095)
1995 em:t
The 5th release and possibly my favourite, well maybe a 3-way tie with Woob & Qubism. Not to be confused with the ever so talented, Kompakt label co-founder Wolfgang Voigt’s Gas (Ha! That’s a bit funny). Mat P Jarvis is the man behind this ambient techno jewel that feels/sounds like a spaceship ride to the Cygnus constellation. Another tidbit of info on the label; Artists got to select an animal image from the Oxford Scientific catalogue. Can you name the animal on this cover? If you guessed Invertebrae Ctenophora reward yourself with a listen on headphones.
