Severed Heads
All Saints Day
1989 Nettwerk/Volition
So now that I dove into the Nettwerk stash I’m going to have a hard time leaving. I honestly have not pulled out Severed Heads in a long time. But after ripping this and promptly throwing in Rotund For Success I’m kicking myself a bit. Great industrial synth-pop that fit perfectly among the brilliant Nettwerk roster at the time. Can you hear a bit of fellow Volition label mates Boxcar in the song? I’ve always wondered what that is on the cover and why? Pinecone?

Enjoy!

Yeah, that does look like a pine cone - might be related to traditions observed on All Saints' Day? Just guessing there.
ReplyDeleteAny similarities in sound between Severed Heads and Boxcar might be attributable to mutual producer Robert Racic, who had a distinct style, for sure.
Thanks H3 - keep the Nettwerk comin'!
There's the connection, Robert Racic. I feel that much more smarter now, thanks Shelf! Also I spent an hour looking for a connection between a pinecone & all saints day and found nothing solid. So maybe it's just good fun... after all, do we know what a pineapple has to do with a Big Car? :)
DeleteI only recently learned that the pineapple is a traditional welcome gift and represents hospitality - apparently popular down South. Don't see any connection to "Big Car", though. However, pine cones and pineapples are both sorta spikey?
DeleteAbsolute classic as is most of Tom's earlier works!
ReplyDeleteAgree RA Feutz! Love your blog by the way. The week you posted Frōzen Ghōst I decided I wanted to give this a go, loved those guys.
DeleteNice! Fairing well If I do say. :)

DeleteThe best thing about having questions pertaining to SevHeads, you can go to Twitter and ask Tom yourself. He's a great follow and a hilarious guy.
