The duo of Mark Blackburn and Julius Waters. This song adorned 85%+ of the “chill-out” compilations in the year 2000. I discovered them via Hed Kandi’s Served Chilled 2 which immediately prompted me to head over to the Virgin Megastore and buy Soundphiles. It was featured in the amusing Kronenbourg 1664 - Femme Fatale advert. Fun fact, Julius’s parents were next door neighbors to Brian May of Queen.

Originally the duo was to be called Tremelux but changed at the last minute to Mono, taken from the title of the Phil Spector release Back to Mono. Martin Virgo was part of the Nellee Hooper production team for Massive Attack’s “Unfinished Sympathy” and Björk’s Debut. Siobhan de Maré was a session singer for the Hip Hop & R&B genre. Unfortunately only one album from them but Siobhan went on to work with Robin Guthrie’s project Violet Indiana. With the 60’s spy film tinge, easily one of my favourite songs of the Trip Hop genre.

Their sophomore release (Version 2.0) issued limited run, blister pack mini cd singles. Kind of a pain in the ass to get out without damaging the packaging but a nice addition to the collectables. Great remixes by The Crystal Method & Purity. Couple killer non-album tracks, “Afterglow” I assume sealed the deal for them doing the James Bond theme song for “The World is Not Enough”. If anyone has Purity’s albums Bullets For Words or Sliding Into Chaos and would be willing to share, I’d be very grateful.

Lets celebrate the opening of T2. I introduced my teenage boy to the brilliant movie this weekend (can’t believe its been 21 years!) in preparation of seeing the new one. The .NUXX version is featured in the movie and was the b-side to the original “Born Slippy” single in 1995. If my facts are correct the name comes from the winning dog they bet on at the tracks. And the .Nuxx was inspired by a fault on the computer working files. These lads have never let us down in my opinion, even in their synth-pop days. Of course I can’t sign off without giving props to Tomato (of which Rick & Karl co-founded) for the design.

Here’s a fairly rare one. I know a few of us remember the short lived CD3 (the 7” of the 80’s), I only have a handful. Always have admired Björk and the quirkiness of The Sugarcubes. Life's Too Good is a amazing album that everyone should have a play often. Think the Coldsweat Instrumental is exclusive to this single but you can’t beat the great Meat Mix.

This was double tough… where to go after Nettwerk and which Recoil (because it’s all gold). We all know that Alan Wilder was a major workhorse for Depeche Mode and after he left they were missing just a bit of the magic. Recoil is where that magic went. From the Liquid album we have a great mix of “Jezebel” (featuring The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet) and “Electro Blues For Bukka White” from Bloodline. Most importantly, the complete beautifully dark “Black Box” which was inspired by his brush with death when a bomber went down in front of him while driving in Scotland. Another Intro masterpiece for the artwork.

Ok, last Network post for now. This Skinny Puppy side project supergroup grew out of jam sessions held by cEvin Key & Dwayne Goettel. At times very noisy, at all times very cool. Haujobb remixes the epic “Attallal”, a nice crunchy re-mix of “Sidewinder” and a few non-album tracks adorn this masterpiece. One of my favourite album covers by the infamous Dave McKean.

One of the many Skinny Puppy side projects or should I say cEvin Key side projects. I read somewhere that it was a more palatable Skinny Puppy with punker Alan Nelson on vocal duty versus Ogre, not sure if I’d agree but I love it. Fun story about the cover art, had the pleasure of talking to Steven about his work and this one came up. He explained what better way to represent “Get Stuck” than the worlds largest baby… Brilliant, Ralph’s face says it all. Two non album tracks make this a must have.

I could spend hours talking about Skinny Puppy and how brilliant they are. I used to make my girlfriends watch Ain't It Dead Yet (VHS - yes I'm old) on our second date. If they ran out screaming, it wasn’t meant to be. I did find one that stayed and she’s put up with me for… 26 years now. This was the first single and it makes me smile when I walk by it framed on the wall in my office. Dig that Inferno Gustave.
